Happened SUNDAY SEPTEMBER 22, 2024
We had perfect weather for this year’s annual dinner. About 200 people attended this evening of hearty traditional food and community gathering. Special thanks to the family of David Watkins for carrying on the tradition of his delicious homemade ice cream, to the cooks who worked all afternoon and evening to be sure the food was just right, to Craig Pelton for loan of tables and chairs, and to all Museum Committee & Board members (along with family members!), staff and other folks who pitched in many hours to help make this event a success! And thanks to all who attended! Info tables for Dauntless Dunn III, Dunn County Genealogy Club, and Museum programs were set up for people to check out. Seating was available in the Machinery Building, as well as outside. This was the first year we were able to offer the option of dining inside in a more spacious area, thanks to the new concrete floor in the Machinery Building. We’re looking forward to next year!
WHAT IS A CREAM CAN SUPPER?
It’s an old fashioned meal of sausage, potatoes, corn, cabbage, carrots and onions cooked in an authentic cream can, accompanied by rolls, lemonade, water and coffee. There are a variety of homemade desserts served, including bars and cookies baked by Board and Museum Committee members. We’ll also have homemade ice cream thanks to Mike and Amanda Housel and family. They have also offered to perform a flag ceremony at the close of the evening. Serving and seating outside at the museum if the weather is good. If it rains, or is chilly, it will be moved inside the Machinery Building, but we will definitely still have the event! Handicapped accessible either way! The Machinery Building has a brand new concrete floor and there will be much more space for tables and chairs than when we set up inside the museum on rainy days in the past! We’re doing it on a Sunday evening this year because there are so many Saturday events happening in Dunn County at this time of year. You are welcome to visit the museum before supper; admission is free. Part of the Machinery Building may be blocked off due to food prep.
Here’s some info from the 2023 event:
The 2023 Cream Can Supper was held at the Dunn County Museum on Aug. 26th, with approximately 150 people in attendance. A few quick sprinkles fell, but we were able to serve and seat people outside in front of the main museum building. Cooks and kitchen volunteers had a very busy afternoon getting ready. Guests were able to tour the museum before and after the meal, with free admission for all. Special thanks to Amanda & Mike Housel and family for making David Watkins’ recipe of homemade ice cream, carrying on the tradition David started many years ago (Amanda is David’s daughter; David died a few months before the 2023 event. He is greatly missed.) He would have been very proud! Also special appreciation went to David Myran who provided music at the close of the evening. (We were saddened to hear of David Myran’s passing later in the year.) Thanks to all who attended & the many volunteers and museum staff whose hard work made it happen. Some of our great guests even pitched in to clean up & fold tables and chairs!
